Aqua ultraviolet light specification no more green water in your pond.
Crystal clear pond water is guaranteed when an aqua ultraviolet pond unit is used in conjunction with a biofilter to kill fish pond algae. It is important to choose the correct uv wattage to match your fish ponds conditions. More fish, more sun means a bigger aqua ultraviolet, uv or ultra violet light unit for effective pond algae control is needed. Only suspended types of algae are effected by ultraviolet light.
Fish pond algae control using aqua ultraviolet pond lights or uv pond filters is now old hat but relatively few pond keepers know this secret of ensuring a crystal clear fish pond. These so called uv filters for ponds do an amazing job of eradicating suspended green fish pond algae as soon as it is formed.
This
small combined uv and biofilter often called an aqua ultraviolet unit will cope
with a pond up to 1,000 litres
By the way any reference to filter or filtration in the same context as uv as in uv pond filters or uv filters for ponds or aqua ultraviolet pond filters etc is misleading. On the other hand it is vital to use a biofilter in any fish pond. Biofiltration is a totally different topic .
An aqua ultraviolet light does no filtering of any type. It just kills green algae suspended in water. Thereafter a biofilter is needed to remove the dead fish pond algae as well as to purify the water. An ultra violet light + a biofilter = crystal clear and clean fish ponds.
Guide to approx pond volume to match to aqua ultraviolet wattage. Read manufacturer's instructions.
A 4 watts UV will treat up to 1,000 litres about 250 gallons
An 8 watts UV will treat up to 2,500 litres about 1250 gallons
A 15 watts UV will treat up to 5,000 litres about 2500 gallons
A 30 watts UV will treat up to 10,000 litres about 5000 gallons
If there is no fish pond algae control it is almost certain your fish pond will go green. The only true effective green algae eradication method on an ongoing basis is the use of an uv clarifier or aqua ultraviolet unit correctly sized for your fish pond.
An ultra violet light clarifier (clarifier and not sterilizer is the correct word when used for controlling fish pond algae alone) are sized based upon the following parameters:
Fish stocking density high fish stocking means more ultra violet light capacity.
Extent of shade more shade then less ultra violet light capacity
Depth of pond shallow ponds need more ultra violet light capacity
Pond volume large ponds need more ultra violet light capacity.
It is important to look at the manufacturers instructions to decide which aqua ultraviolet light model you need for your pond. A general guide is shown on this page. Treat it as a guide to selecting an aqua ultraviolet light only.
Green algae suspended in pond water should never be a problem these days. Fish pond algae are so easy to banish forever with aqua ultraviolet light.
Types of algae in ponds:
Suspended algae normally green but often brownish. When it is difficult to see what might be causing cloudy water then it is almost certainly due to suspended algae they are only 4 micron in diameter. The worst case is water resembling pea soup.
Long strands normally in conjunction with clear water is called string algae. The only product I know to get rid of blanketweed or string algae is Viresco Aqua is often used to attempt to eradicate string algae.
The above two are bad types of algae.
Pond side algae and algae covering all surfaces in pond. This is non invasive and is very useful algae do not remove it from the pond. It grows to about 1/2 inch long. Your fish will love it.
