Living green algae thrive in garden ponds rich in nutrients. Long sunlight hours and warm temperatures speed up green algae growth dramatically. Biofilters do not remove green algae. Green algae is sometimes brown. In fact green algae belong to a family of algae which come in many different colours. Green algae are plants and thrive under ideal conditions like the following:

  • Warm water favours green algae formation

  • High nitrate and phosphate levels (especially phosphate cause green algae) in the pond water mainly from fish food.

  • High sunlight intensity on the fish pond as seen in countries like mine are ideal for algae formation.

 All the above conditions favour photosynthesis. It is not unusual under perfect conditions for a garden fish pond to go green overnight. Green algae are able to multiply up to 30 times per hour.

Fortunately algae causing ponds to turn green no longer needs to happen ever. This is due to the harnessing of ultraviolet light in uv filters for water gardens and making uv pond filters that work work effectively in a fish pond environment to control fish pond algae formation.
